About Grybów

Grybów is a town located in the Lesser Poland (Małopolska) Voivodeship. It serves as a natural cultural and economic center for the surrounding rural municipalities.

The town's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when in 1340 King Kazimierz the Great chose a relatively well-developed settlement on the southern edge of the Polish state and named it GRYNBERG - the town of green hills. The founding charter (establishing the town under Magdeburg law) was granted to a burgher of Sącz, Hanko, by the well-known Kraków patrician Wierzynek.

Numerous trade routes to Rus and Hungary crossed here, and trade and the cloth-making industry flourished, along with the production of saltpeter and lime. Over its long history, Grybów experienced periods of prosperity and decline. The town burned down several times, but there was also a period when it served as the seat of a county stretching from Krynica to the borders of the Ciężkowice region. The area was visited by Kazimierz Pułaski, Wincenty Witos, Artur Grottger, Stanisław Wyspiański, and Józef Mehoffer. Józef Piłsudski rode through the town on his horse Kasztanka. During the partitions of Poland it was visited by Emperor Franz Joseph I, and the Austrian duke Hosch built a manor house on the site of the former castle, which still adorns the central part of the Market Square with its architecture today.
